hey yo

been a long time since i have been floating around these parts (and when i did, i rarely made it out of the traders forum). since i've last been here, they closed down my summer home and the wife and i had a baby girl (sorry NYPeachhead, we stole your baby name, though we did have it "reserved" first!)

anyways, i'm back in the mix, and got the permission slip signed from the wife to see DTB at Highline in November.

who else is in?

where is the pre-party?

I'm In. I'm a Sox fan Vinny, but it's all good
Unfortunately there's nothing over there but swank lounge type places and hotel bars. Unfortunately Red Rocks West closed so not much else. Chelsea Brewing Co. in Chelsea Piers at 18th St. isn't too far or perhaps Flight 151 on 8th bwtn 16 and 17. Neither a great choice. Otherwise it's Maritime Hotel bars at $15 a drink....yawn.
Actually the Hog Pit is on 13th and 9th ave so not too far a walk, it's a Dive bar type place. That would actually be my rec. all things considered, cheap food and (relatively) cheap drinks. At least they have $3 PBR.

s'ok brendon.....baseball affiliations don't count in the winter months

as far as bars go, you are right...the area sucks. but the good news is that happiness is a cab ride away, and the dtb wont go on untill at least 9. so that leaves plenty of time for happy hour specials in the village before stumbling cross town to the venue

we are thinking about going to the Brass Monkey on Little West 12th...basically on the West Side Highway. It has a few floors and a roof deck. Should have a happy hour...either that or we are thinking of going to Brother Jimmy's and hopping a cab over..maybe grab a beer at the Monkey before.

Brass Monkey is a great choice, forgot about that. I'll be there before the show. I don't have a ticket yet so hope I can get one at the door, leave, hit the bar, and come back to the show. I'll prob have an ABB tie dye on and a Mule hat as well. Won't stick out at that place for a Thursday happy hour with all the suits at all If anyone has an extra let me know
Thanks

Mocean Worker was okay for a bit but after awhile it got monotonous to my ears. Similar to club music thumping. Eh. *shrug*

JFC and I were on the floor for a bit but moved upstairs where there was way more room to boogie. And boogie we did.

How funky was Kofi's playing?! FUN-KAY!!! *laugh* What a treat to hear him and Derek play off each other. Derek would slide on over behind Kofi and the two of them would lock into a groove and run with it!

Got treated to a bunch of new tunes like Down in the Flood, These Days, I Know What It's Like, Get Out My Life Woman - um, or whatever the official titles may be. *grin* I'm not sure, I just know they were knew to my ears.

Got some old favs, too. My Favorite Things was whacky, Anyday was spot on. Mike's Soul Serenade and Crow Jane falsetto vocals brings me to my knees. Meet Me at the Bottom and Leaving Trunk were downright gritty and foot stomping good. Day-em. Up Above My Head rendered me weighless in it's joy.

What a night. What a warm up for another dose tonight.

Best DTB show I've ever seen last night. It amazes me how they just seems to get better with each time. Just like you said, Kofi was really really funky. I think they read the crowd really well. This wasn't a sit down theatre, it was a room with lots of people drinking and getting amped for the weekend. A few years ago I didn't think they paced a show well. Last night they delivered what the crowd wanted. Heavier on Blues and Rock and less tunes like Sahib. The only long jazz piece was My Favorite Things and it was sublime !! Unreal show. Can't wait for the new record .

The show was pretty sick last night. The Highline Ballroom is nice place to see a show. I will say that it was packed on the floor though...real tight with some serious swaying goin on with some people around us that couldn't be over 18 and were gladly not carded at the bar. But in any case, I prefer GA DTB shows these days over the seated events. There just seems to be more action in the crowd.

I agree with comments on the opening band...ok at first but then enough was enough. They also seemed out of energy at the end of their set.

Anyway, DTB was on fire. I am going to say it was Kofi and Mattison last night for me. They were both killing it. Kofi tore up My Favorite Things on the flute and keys for a long while. They teased This Sky (the entire opening portion) and then went into My Favorite Things. I am hoping tonight we get the rest of This Sky. The is a favorite and one I have never seen live..Mike Mattison's vocals were really right on last night and he got a bunch of time on the mic.

Derek was as equally on fire last night...really took a few solos to the next level. His second solo in Anyday was real "Whipping Post" sounding flying. We have seen that song over 10 times now live and I think it was one of the bands best....

I am not sure of the exact set list or order but here are a few I remember...Down in the Flood, Don't Miss Me, These Days, Done Got Over It, Soul Serenade, This Sky (opening tease) into My Favorite Things, Anyday (earlier in the setlist), Get Out of My Life, Down Don't Bother Me (which fearures Mike M. really killing it), Leavin Trunk, Up Above My Head (maybe), Crown Jane....

I think the best part is that we are going again tonight!!!! See everybody there. Going to try to get to the venue just before 8:00 for surprise opener. See you inside.

So glad we made the choice to go last night. Last night's show blew away Albany and Peekskill. Maybe it was the venue, I loved feeling the energy of being on the floor right up by the stage. "Anyday" was awesome, I acually got chills from Derek's solos.
Wish I was going tonite.

Fantastically amazing show, I can't believe how this band just gets better and better every time I see them. "Down in the Flood" was amazing; "Anyday" was never one of my favorite D&D songs, but I now love it; "Favorite Things" was absolutely off the hook; "Soul Serenade" was so great to hear, one of my favorite songs of all time.

I'll second, third and fourth the sentiments of the opening band. First song was great, great tight, funky horn band. Then they play the same song four or five more times.

I'm not a fan of the venue, though. Could be a great standing room place, but the waiters walking through out the crowd to their tables VIP was unbearable. If you're going to have VIP tables, fine, but it should not take away from the rest of the crowd. Add to that, when the food service was finally over, they got a beer delivery for the next day's shows and began walking that through the crowd to the bar. I guess that's what I get for standing towards the back of the room. The fat drunk guy that kept falling on people didn't help.

Either way, doesn't take away from one of the best shows I have ever seen from this band.

this was by far the best derek show i've seen- he rose above everything i've ever seen him do, and he left many melted faces to be cleaned up off the floor at highline ballroom that night (contrary to the previous poster, i found the venue to be FANTASTIC- intimate, incredible sound, cute waitresses, good view no matter where you stand). He basically took it to a level i've never seen him take it to before; he was firing on all cylinders. nearly all of the jams left my jaw on the floor and the hair on my spine raised. just unmatched virtuosity. i know i definitely spotted a taper there, i'm just praying that a recording surfaces! and what's up with no youtube vids from the show?

long live derek the legend

I think as standing rooms go, it was pretty decent, very intimate and sound was solid. I just prefer theaters or outdoor venues, I don't like to fight for standing or elbow room - it was like the F train at rush hour. I thought I'd be fine towards the back but found myself standing in the service path. It's pretty distracting when a bus boy shines a flashlight in your eyes while you're getting your mind blown by "My Favorite Things" so he can bring the VIP trash can back to the kitchen. I've definitely been to better standing room venues in NYC, ones you can actually move around in.

Still didn't detract from the show at all. I had a red eye flight the next day to Austin (where I by chance saw Devon Allman, after his show unfortunately) and didn't regret being up all night and red eyed the next day for the DTB show's sake. Freaking amazing.
