Nothing special. Trey doesn't build solos, he just plays. There's no feeling, no passion. Listening to him play is almost like watching the Dustin Hoffman character in "Rain Man"...very smart, but ZERO emotion.

in trey's defense, theband does not move with him at all. i think he tried to create a little tension at the 1:30 mark by repeating some licks - and this is where the band should have built up the intensity.

goes to show you why rhthym sections are so important to the jam and why the ABB and DTB are so good. they KNOW when derek and warren want to crank it up a notch and they hep them create that tension. this band is just flat and never changes the mood.

I don't doubt his technical ability, i'm sure he is very capable, but there is nothing soulful about his playing.

i've never seen phish, but i have seen trey's solo band twice.
he was awesome. farmhouse is a favorite lp of mine.
i think, maybe, his personality gets in the way of an
objective opinion?? there is a youtube of warren and
trey which is interesting.

I'm glad Trey is clean and sober, and I'm glad Phish is getting back together, but Trey has a LONG way to go before he will be "better than ever."

Back in 93-95, there wasn't anything the man couldn't do with a guitar. I hope he gets back to that level, because I miss the old Trey.

Anyone who can get big purely from word of mouth and then go on to play festivals for 80,000 people in the middle of nowhere deserves MUCH more than a yawn.

I'm sure Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Warren, Derek, BB King, Santana, and Neil Young would be the first to disagree with you yawners.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Don't take this personally, But I place as much merit in what Bobby & Phil say and think as I do in
the words that come from Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons...

I think the yawners need to give Trey a little respect here. I saw him right up front at the 07 Langerado Festival and he definitely was good. Maybe we are spoiled because we have two of the greatest guitar players in the world, but Trey has something.

I agree about the construction of his leads and the lack of band support, but maybe one day he will find a niche of his own. Also, the crowds at his shows are going to be cool. You have to consider the whole package. At least he is trying.

Here is the snippet I got from the concert. You can see he was playing with his heart here

I was at the Boston show and thought it was pretty damn good. Is he Warren or Derek - no. But he is good at what he does, and at his best, with Phish, pretty inventive, imo.

Agree with comments above, before we say he is back we'll need to hear YEM. I'll be waiting and listening.

I know you're not a Dead fan..... but Phil Lesh is one of the finest musicians/improvisers on the planet, unquestionably....

I'm sure two dudes in makeup that play easy power chords and rely on a long tongue, blood, and fake flying have opinions as credible as a classically trained composer/jazz trumpeter/talented bassist and a rhythm guitar player that developed his own style based off that of McCoy Tyner. Sure he hasn't been at his best lately but listen to a show from 73 or 74 and tell me Gene Simmons is anywhere near that.

The fact is, Trey is a really good guitar player and I understand that he isn't going to be as popular on a site like this that fluffs Derek and Warren but he deserves much more than a yawn. I wonder if any of you yawners realize that his guitar is literally impossible to play unless you're a capable guitar player. Yeah it's built that way..

BTW, I "fluff" Derek and Warren a good deal myself...I just think Trey deserves a little better.

Just for the record, I'm nowhere near being a Kiss fan....despise them. I just don't get the Dead & Phish, never have and I saw the G. Dead about 5 times in the 70's-90's..

To me...Trey just noodles... for hours at a time.

Peace
