Well, I was writing a nice flowery note saying how much we love the extended family and how sorry it makes us to see people attacking each other on this forum, but I kicked the off switch on the power strip to the computer and lost the post. By the time I rebooted, the playpen was already full of people who seem to like calling each other names... so I'm actually laughing instead of getting mawkish about this. I'm not entirely sure where to go with this now, it's your time and if you want to spend it beating on each other, that's your choice. I just want a segregated place to put posts and people who enjoy that sort of thing.

The Whipping Post was created as a place to beat a dead horse, not each other. In the first ten years of running allmanbrothersband.com, we probably banned two or three people. But lately there has been a barrage of daily requests to ban this guy or that guy, and everyone from newbies to people with lots of stars after their user names engage in personal attacks that raise the hair on the back of my neck. Banning people is fairly pointless, as you have all seen it can be an endless cycle. I can remove you and all your posts with one mouse click, so the good news for me is it is less work to delete someone than it is for that someone to create a new account, but if someone is determined enough they can do it. And you can ban IP addresses but someone with only a moderate amount of skill, or even luck, can get around that. This is the Internet folks, and it brings out both the best and the worst in people.

So... we're not going to sit here and read every thread and play Forum Police. But we have a new tool at our disposal to use when we see fit - if people want to act like two year olds, and apparently a number of people find that an attractive idea ;-), we will move the threads to that forum. And if people act exclusively like two year olds, they may find themselves restricted to posting in the Playpen.

If you want to set your sites a tad higher, check out the other forums. If you want to talk about something controversial or that most people have tired of discussing, put it in the Post. Post something way over the line, it will be removed and we will remove you and your reincarnations should we feel like doing so. Yes, it is somewhat arbitrary. That's life.

We hope that most of you come here because you enjoy it and you enjoy each other. We know many, many people have made friends and even partners for life through this community. We want to keep that good vibe. But in any community of this size, there will be a wide range of personalities and we'll do our best to figure out how to keep the peace.

Hit your note, whatever it is...

Rowland and Lana

Already been there, posted in the "Name Calling Thread". Posted the word "Puddinhead". Not to anybody, I just wanted to have the fun of being one of the first to post in a new forum.

Fine with me, kind people. It is the internet. So, the anonymity allows people that are inclined to act in certain ways to do so. You and Lana go way above for us, some that are way less deserving than others.

Thank you and know that YOU are loved.

Speaking only for myself, a lot of people find the anonymity of the internet appealing because they can get things off of their chest and unburden themselves, be it pent up frustration with a co-worker, an employer, an aggravating family member, etc. Who better to take it out on than someone they don't know personally, someone from an internet discussion forum. Well, it is the internet.

BUT...personally, I have CHOSEN to represent my true self because my path has crossed with literally dozens of folks from this site at shows, festivals, fan gatherings, etc. I have really enjoyed meeting these people and maintaining REAL friendships that have been built, whether they are fledgling or full blown friendships. I care about other people's feelings, and Lord knows I don't like being offended any more than I want to be offensive to someone else. The offensive stuff I read that perhaps irks me, but isn't necessarily directed at me, I tend to ignore. At worst, I'll tell someone to KMA. But most times, I just shake my head in disgust.

Folks, life is way too short to be ugly to each other. Be kind. It's really not that difficult. And it's not too much to ask.

Rowland (and Lana,) I appreciate all that you do for this place. Good luck with this latest endeavor.

Rowland, thanks for your post and your efforts here. They *are* appreciated. That said, I wanted to address this particular statement from you because I think it reaches to the core of the issue. Most of the recent (say in the past 6 months or so) crap has come about from a few well known individuals..you know who they are as you guys have been banning them time after time. Why not be proactive and relegate them to the Playpen at this point? I believe much of the bad stuff would certainly go away at that point. Just my .02

It's just like bans ST, if someone gets confined to the playpen they just get a new account and bam, they can post everywhere again.

Gotcha, ok. Thanks.

Rowland, thanks to you and Lana for all you do.

As to the recent, ahem, events, and I know how hard it is, because I try my best...but in the end, the only way to deal with the issue at hand is to ignore. Troll-baiting is so obvious, especially when done machine-gun style. Hard as it may be, that type of thing we should all try our best to ignore. We all know it when we see it.

It may be an imperfect solution, but kudos to Rowland and Lana for running a great site in general, and taking the time to address a problem we've all been trying to deal with.

Thanks to both of you.......

Thanks, Rowland. I think this could be helpful if we really do see offensive threads and posts disappear from the WP, and wind up in the Playpen. Most of us are not trolls, and don't want to come back under a new name, so maybe it will help all of us try to keep it a little more respectful. I hope you are serious about limiting some people to that forum.

well....I guess I'll have to venture forth on occasion into your area of expertise and take my lumps.

However, now that the GOP has assumed (?) the role of watchdog, I may...may, put you on the defensive now and then. Unlikely but with the backing of DFC , who I don't believe for one second voted for Obama, I'll have all the ammo I need. As soon as he gets back from moose hunting in Alaska, we'll give ya a shout.

Go Celtics !!!

I gotta tell ya's, this thread is hilarious to me. I stop by for the first time since the Jam For Duane to get a load of some pics and maybe some videos, and see Rowlands' post at the top of the list. Ah, what the heck, couldn't hurt to take a peek at what ol' Rowland has to say. And it didn't hurt a bit. I watched his frustration with this kind of thing for more than a decade, and as one who got caught up in his trying to figure out who gets banned for what, who gets reinstated under what circumstances etc., I'm here to tell you that I've never "met" a more patient, always-endeavors-to-do-the-right-thing person before. When I got banned it never occurred to me to question Rowland or Lana about it, and I never did. When I got reinstated after being told that the ban was a mistake, it never occurred to me to demand an explanation, or even ask for one. It's their site and I'm a guest. They can do whatever they want with my "membership" here. After all, they pay the dues for all of us, we don't.

So I read Rowland's post and get a little bit curious about what prompted it, but not curious enough to go searching for the answer myself. I figure if I read the subsequent comments I'll probably get some vague idea of what it's about, and if I don't, I really don't care and I ain't gonna even remember it tomorrow because I never give a second thought about what anyone does with their own property. As soon as I hit "Submit" on this little bit of profundity, it is no longer mine, it's Rowland's and Lana's to do with what they will. Whether it's my oh-so-important musings, or my best friend's or my worst adversary's, none of us has any right or reason to even let it enter our pea-brains that we should have any say-so whatsoever over who gets to say what when or where, or if they get to say anything at all.

So what do I find hilarious about this thread? I see one of the pushiest, sometimes-foul-mouthed posters on the site immediately start telling Rowland what's wrong with his solution. I see another one actually demand to know why Rowland doesn't "...keep banning the people we keep telling you to ban...." I see people who I could point to a hundred of their posts that were put out here for no other reason than to troll for a reaction from someone saying they *aren't* trolls and wouldn't *want* to come back under a different name, which kind of implies to me that, want to or not, they probably don't have the self discipline to stay away if they did get banned.

I just think it's funny. Not everyone who's posted in this thread has gorged themselves on copious amounts of hypocrisy pie, but damn man, some of you guys are too much! Maybe Rowland just wanted to get a couple of things off his chest and doesn't feel the need to hear from the peanut gallery at all in response to it. Did you ever consider that? Obviously not.

Oh well. I always thought this was a self-evident truism so I've never said it out loud, but Rowland, it's your site, do whatever you want to do with it. No, really, that's the extent of my advice for you Rowland, except to say don't worry, be happy, and ignore those who apparently think they know better how you should handle your own property than you do.

Tom S.

If Rowland didn't want conversation on this topic he could have just posted and locked the thread.

Ah, I see. So Rowland posts on his own website and we should all take it as an invitation to tell him he should keep doing what we *keep* telling him to do. Got it.

I can't fathom what depth of hubris it takes to tell someone what they should do in their own home even once, much less to keep telling him.

Got a question for ya. You *keep* "telling" Rowland who to ban. How do the "we" you say you're a part of come to a consensus on who you should *tell* him to ban? Do you meet in a Star-Chamber type chat room and go around a virtual table giving thumbs up or thumbs down to the targets of your self-appointed scrutiny? And when Rowland ignores your demand for banning someone from his website, what's the accepted, appropriate number of times to *keep* telling him to ban that person? Is there a point at which your Star Chamber compatriots and you just give a collective shrug-of-the-shoulders and acquiesce to the reality that your opinion on this subject is, as it should be, completely irrelevant and unimportant to anyone else but yourselves? That epiphany obviously hasn't struck you yet.

quote:
Feel free to just call people out by name next time, it would be alot classier of you.

Hmmm....I thought the quotations and accurate descriptions would be enough to get the point across. So how exactly is it less classy to give my general overview of the thread than to poke my finger in 3 or 4 people's chest by calling them out by name?

And speaking of names.....Ummm....I don't know your name. I might use your screen name if it said that you wanted to play like Derek, or wanted to grow your hair like Derek or whatever, but wanna BE Derek? That's not a name dude, that's just weird, obsessive idolatry that I choose not to indulge you with. There is an alternative that I could stomach using. It's less obsessed-sounding, but still an accurate description of you from what I can see. Why not change your nick to "Wannabe-a-Webmaster"?

Tom S.
