Honest question, Goliath.

How would you handle the squeeze this manager is in? He's not alone.

Pat,

I haven't seen enough information to make a decision. I see where he says he will have to lay off 8 people, and needs 8% more revenue to avoid laying them off, but anytime we get down to brass tacks in situations like these, the added tax is something like $500 or something equally silly. How much is his net? Laying off 8 people would come out to something like $250,000, and that is just at 30K/year per employee. Give me a real world situation where increased taxes caused wholesale layoffs. Lots of myths out there about democrats and taxes.

Well, since no taxes have actually been changed yet, I would wait to see what tax changes are actually going to be implemented before taking any action.....what is said on the campaign trail doesn't always get implemented - especially if others have to approve it...

That is different than people having to be laid off because of the state of the economy....

Going great David, listening to some Red Hot Chicken this afternoon. Believe it or not, I finally met Bluedaddy in Greenwood, SC of all places at a band competition.

Maybe he should learn to spell Barack's name right, and look for Bush/Cheney stickers if he has to lay people off because of the economy.....

I know it is just another broad stroke slam at democrats, but the broad strokes can go both ways ...............

Right, it's still early and we'll have to see how the tax situation works out in real time. The one that's got us concerned at my work location - and is not being talked about much - is the minimum wage. Really just another backhanded tax on business...We already know when it moves to $7.25 we will have to fire some people. It's hard enough at $6.55. Obama wants to jump it up to $9.25!

These are the people that can least afford to get fired. They don't have much of an education, but are vital to our day to day operation. We won't be able to afford them, though, and their prospects for hooking on somewhere else are not that bright. What's going to happen to these folks? I hate to see people get fired, but there will be nothing else to do.

It's already $7.75 in Illinois - and goes up to $8 in July 2009

I hear ya, Pat. But is it slow revenue growth crossed with increased labor costs that is the root cause, or simply increased labor? Those people, sadly, will not be alone in finding themselves out of work in this economy. My coworkers are being laid off come May 1, a couple of hundred, due to outsourcing. It is real hard to watch this happen. Interesting times, and tough times, we are living in now.

Any employer who thinks of his employees as fungible goods has probably already shipped the 140 jobs overseas anyway. A rational employer would cut the least productive workers regardless of their politics.

I guess this puts the US Government squarely in the "non-rational" category. Especially since they don't produce anything. They only consume.

I would disagree that nothing good is produced by government, double negative notwithstanding, respectfully, of course.

Maybe that was a little harsh, but after reading Brock's post my mind started thinking along the lines of the infamous "Government Shutdown" - when Clinton and the Republicans couldn't agree on a budget and he wouldn't sign it. The news reported that "all non-essential personnel were sent home." Pretty telling IMO.

In the private sector, anybody "non-essential" doesn't get in the door in the first place. And if you can trick your way in, as soon as it's discovered that you're non-essential - "don't let the door hit ya!"....

It would be like just having one or two people answering the phones saying "Sorry, but I am very, very unable to help you", instead of thousands of people answering the phone saying "Sorry, I am very, very unable to help you".

I resent that insinuation. I am the trouble 'your mother told you about'. Totally different than capital T trouble.

says Wayne....

Plan on going to Macon to the Skydog62 concert onthe 23rd of this month and maybe the randall Bramlett/Chuck Leavel concert in December. Just jump in the truck and ride. I'll get you home safe!!!

And maybe we will pass by the CEO's house that is going to lay off the Obama supporters and tell him that he is about to cause a world of hurt for his company in lawsuits for laying people off because of there politics...

Riddle: My guy didn't win, but I didn't vote for McCain. Who did I vote for????
