I just read that Mirch Mitchell passed away at a hotel in Oregon, in his sleep, earlier this morning. The report said he died of natural causes, even though he was only 61. He was one of the most underrated drummers of all time. I really enjoyed his playing and he will be missed. I understand that he was part of the Hendrix Tribute shows this year and last year.

I guess Jimi's got a drummer's chair waiting for him.
Now the three can jam again ...

Very sad news. Mitch Mitchell was certainly on my list of favorite drummers. R.I.P. Mitch.

Just saw him outside the Chicago Theatre a few weeks ago after the Experience Hendrix show. Just goes to show you see em while you can you never know when they will be gone. He chatted with us and shook a few hands but wouldn't sign for anyone saying then he'd have to for everyone. Glad I had the chance to thank him for the music.

Jimi Hendrix drummer found dead in Portland hotel

01:10 PM PST on Wednesday, November 12, 2008

By DAVID KROUGH, kgw.com and AP Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s drummer Mitch Mitchell was found dead in a downtown Portland hotel Wednesday.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s office said 62-year-old Mitch Mitchell likely died of natural causes. His body was found just after 3 a.m. at the Benson Hotel.

Experience Hendrix

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

Mitchell had been playing with the Experience Hendrix tour that just made a stop in Portland at the Schnitz last Friday.

Mitchell along with bass players Noel Redding and Billy Cox backed Hendrix for the generation defining sounds of his electrified psychedelic blues. The Experience played behind Hendrix at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight festivals in the late 1960s.

Hendrix died in 1970, Redding died in 2003. Mitchell was with the group from 1966-70.

That is a real shame. Listen to the jam at the end of "If 6 Was 9" for an example of why Mitch was more than just a hired gun. He was an important part of Jimi's sound.

In honor of Mitch, I'll put on my thinking cap and come up with a good B&P offer. I'll post it on this thread as soon as I figure out which Jimi show to share.

Got to see Mitch play with the Experience Hendrix tour last year at The Beacon. Closest I ever got to see the JHE. Very sad, way too young. RIP Mitch
