Well, as you may have heard, the rumors were true! Derek Trucks showed up at the Bear Creek Festival this past weekend and sat in with Lettuce, Dumpstaphunk and Soulive. All three bands sounded great on their own, but as usual, when Derek took the stage he brought the music to a whole new level.

All three guest spots were enjoyable, but I felt like Derek cut loose the most with Soulive, playing more than half of their set and really ripping it up, Derek-style Look for these recordings to show up on Archive.org, there were several tapers and they will be worth hearing. As the Funky Meters show at Jazz Fest showed, there is nothing better than Derek Trucks soloing over a smoking hot funk groove It doesn't get any better than that!

As if that wasn't cool enough, Kofi was artist in residence at Bear Creek and sat in with everybody and anybody all weekend long. I loved seeing him with my old New Orleans favorites the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, among others. He and Derek both seemed to be having a great time.

Thanks Derek! You made a good festival even better.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about! That is from the Lettuce show. SO funky!

As good as that was, the Soulive set was the highlight of the whole festival, for me. Can't wait to hear that show again, if only to confirm that it really was THAT good. Many of the same musicians are in both Lettuce and Soulive, but Derek got to shine more with Soulive.

Good stuff!

When Lettuce broke up in the 90s, Soulive formed from the ashes. Guitarist Eric Krasno (standing next to Derek in the funky hat) and organist Neal Evans (on the right with afro) are in both bands, and there are many similiarities between the two bands.

Soulive in its purest form is a trio with Krasno, Evans, and brother Alan Evans on drums, but at Bear Creek the Lettuce horn section sat in with Soulive, making for a bigger sound. Add Derek, Kofi and Ivan Neville from Dumpstaphunk, and you've got a serious band!

I can tell this is from the Lettuce set because bassist Eric Combes and guitarist Adam Smirnoff are on stage, and those are just about the only two members of Lettuce that didn't sit in during the Soulive show.

Oh yeah! That is the REALLY good stuff, thanks steeleti

Derek plays on 5 tunes with Soulive, the last five songs of the show, which are...

Vapor
Outrage
El Ron
Bubble
Tighten Up

Vapor features some very airy, ethereal playing from Derek. Very atmospheric.
Outrage is straight-up, horn-fueled funk jamming perfection. Derek tears the roof off!
El Ron has a nice groove and even if it doesn't have much Derek, Kofi takes a nice flute solo.
Bubble is utterly cosmic. Derek is on fire, the band is locked in, and heaven and nature sing!
Tighten Up is an old soul classic where they introduce the band, but watch for the interplay between Derek and Eric Krasno at the end of the tune. MAGIC!

Go and get it people! It doesn't get much better than this....

Krasno's playing has really progressed since I first got into Lettuce and Soulive. Not that he didn't have mad chops then, but now he sounds awesome! Good stuff!

No, seriously, you all need to hear this Soulive show This richly deserves a bump, we listened to it all day at the office today and I am just blown away by how good it sounds, and how lucky I was to be there in person for this awe-inspiring display of musical mastery.

In fact, if you're not torrent-savvy, I'll even do a B&P for this show. One disc, very simple.

PM me for details and then start preparing yourself mentally and spiritually
