We've got an upcoming interview with Derek for Hittin' the Note issue #60 - the ABB 40th anniverary issue coming out in late February of next year. I've always admired the intelligent questions (and humor) this community has come up with when I've asked for input - any thought for this one? We will be covering Already Free - the new CD and his ABB perspective along with various other subjects...

What new music is he listening to? Derek has given all of us music to check out from his roots (which become our own or are already our own), so I'm curious as to what is catching his ear that is new today. Derek is as much as listener as a player so anything he listens to is worth checking out, imho.

Thanks for the opportunity JNB!

I'd like to know how the album with McCoy Tyner came about. What was it like playing with Jack, Ron Carter? Any other similar collaberations in the works?

I would like to know what Derek thinks about his wife's influence in the direction of his band. If I remember right, Derek and his band were performing years before Derek and Susan got together. I personally believe that she has had a big impact on the direction the band has taken. I would like Derek's thoughts on her influence in the band's direction. I would also like to know his thoughts on his recent rise to notoriety.

How did Eric Clapton get in touch with him about being in his touring band? How shocked was he when the offer was made?

What's it like to share the stage with Clapton and Doyle Bramhall II?

I'd like to know how often Derek is asked to appear on other artists recordings, who the artists are that ask him and now that he has his home studio, is it easier to say yes to those requests. I'd like to know if he's said "no" to someone real cheesy.

I'd like to know, what's the weirdest or strangest thing he's seen at an ABB show? We can see him, but we can't see what he is looking at.

How is his relationship with Warren Haynes?

We all know they work together in the ABB, but don't collaborate all THAT much either in the Mule or DTB...

Did he ever locate that baseball card with his relative that played pro baseball? A buddy of mine was in a card shop (when Derek was a kid) and saw him ride up in a bike, come in and ask the store owner if he had such and such card, to which the answer was no.

love that question--alot strange stuff to see from his place on stage--i wonder if he tunes out the audience & only focuses on the band & the music.could be distracting to look out there lol

I'd like him to be asked what was going on with him at the 10/10/08 Atlanta show. There was definately some magic onstage that night. Derek seemed to be smiling more, and enjoying the night more than any show I had seen him play in the past.

It would be nice for Derek to expound on what he's learned musically both in theory and technique. We've all watched him grow as a musican. From where he was in say ... 98 to now, it's almost mind boggling how much he has grown and accomplished. Also what does he have yet to learn or do better musically.

Favorite sports teams, and did he ever play organized sports? which ones?
How did things go with him and Susan regarding Sox vs. Rays?

I would like to know if he has ever had the urge to step up to the mike and sing a song or add background vocals (studio or on stage).

And if he could sing a song, what type of song would it be??

I'm pretty sure he sings, if nowhere else but the shower

In addition to the post by stormyrider around #4, I'd love to hear the answer to this one:

"You and Oteil played "True Gravity" in '99 with the ABB while Dickey was still in the band. Warren co-wrote the song. Why in he11's name don't you guys play this gem of a piece any more?"

Similarly:

"Warren co-wrote "Kind of Bird" with Dickey. There has been both speculation and a sense of anticipation amongst fans for years (on the message boards anyway) about what the band with you and Oteil as members could do with that number. Why in Gawd's name isn't that one in the repertoire?"

I think that about cuts it for me. Would love to hear/see them play "Get On With Your Life" too, but if I only get one or two questions, those would be at the top of my list.

Kudos to HTN!!!

There's some good stuff that's been posted here...thank you! Some of the answers have already been reported in interviews already published by HTN. Every time we have Derek on the cover the magazine sells out - so it's understandable that some answers are not as well known as others. Look for us to start putting up back issues on the website that are sold out in print.

Any other thoughts, comments, perspectives?

JNB

I would like to know how Derek finds some of these silvertone/danelectro's that he plays on stage now. I would also like to know a little more about the Les Paul that he played on the this years ABB tour!

I would also like to know how he works out parts with Warren--so many of the classic ABB tunes were re-worked on this tour, I wonder if he sat down with Warren and worked specific parts out of if they just had a general framework in which to improvise and went from there, if that makes sense.
