America goes to hell while the whole brain-dead country is distracted by American Idol. More effective than any terrorist threat.

I see nothing wrong with people watching it, it happens to make a lot of people happy. My Mom and dear departed Aunt both loved it. So does my Daughter and Sister.

America has been going to hell for years........

I see a lot wrong with people watching it. They should be listening to The Village People instead... or maybe Eric Clapton.

Don't really care for the show myself, but that's no reason for me to come down on them for watching it. It's not like they're Republicans.

The early episodes of American Idol can be hilarious. It's actually one of those show that parents and teens/pre-teens sit down together for. That ain't the worst thing....

Paula Abdul makes me vomit, I wouldn't be able to put up with Simon's s&#t. I have enough of a tv habit without this garbage, give me the old Gong show anyday, the only a ho*e on it was Rex Reed.

I've been watching since season 4. I thought it was rubbish but my friends who watched it told me to tune in to watch the southern rocker that year. I thought that it might be interesting to see what they considered a southern rock guy who turned out to be Bo Bice. There's usually enough bits of rock or blues singers to keep me watching.

It's like a form of football. you have your great plays, your tight ends, your fumbles, and your touchdowns. Fan from season 1. Yes, the beginning is the funniest, middle part of season you can take or leave, and the end kicks butt, but as with any great show, you can only have so many seasons. I love A.I.

Many of the "rockers" on the show really aren't rockers. They might think they are, but once their album comes out it usually is the same pop drivel that the regular pop singers record.

However the fault can be placed on the producers who do a great job at watering down the material for these singers.

Yeah not really the artists fault. It is the company and producers not knowing what they should do with them. That Daughtry guy lost and it was the best that could have happened to him. At least his album sounded like him.

They blew it with Bo Bice and his album was no where rocking enough. Never heard his second album but was told it was closer to what the first should have been.

Their ratings have been dropping. Last season producers were gettng kinda worried, so expect so trumped up drama this year.

On the one hand, I'm kinda like OldDirt; if people enjoy it, what's the harm.

But even with that, I still can't help feeling that it's the embodiment of everything wrong with music today. Commercialization and hype without substance. It's not about music or talent, it's about business. If there were some balance on TV - meaning some programing that regularily showcased established and young talent - then it might not be so bad. I keep thinking that an update of something like Midnight Special or Kirshner's Rock Concert would surely find an audience today, but it doesn't seem in the cards.

It's a singing contest. The two biggest shows on TV are a singing contest and a dancing contest. Don't know if that's good or bad, but, no big deal if you watch it or don't. Kenny makes a great point...it is great family programming.

Sadly, if you put a music show with real musicians on one network and a Guitar Hero or Rock Band tournament on the other, I'll bet the video game tournament would win...sign of the times.

Really, let people watch what they want to.

In all the years it has been on TV, I only watched with my Aunt because I was taking care of her.
Even then I took it for what it was, a talent or "no" talent family show. Something a family can watch with their kids/teens and get a laugh from, without having to watch a bunch of filth.

Otherwise I have my own TV that I can watch great shows like Family Guy, Andy Griffith, Futurama...etc...LOL !!!
