The website I work for recently put up an article asking people to vote for their favorite cover of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

I personally think the ABB's version takes the cake. You can judge for yourself and place your vote here:

I voted for Joan Baez, always have loved it. Didn't care for the write up she got, but everyone is entitled to an opinion.

The ABB did do some great versions. The live one captured for that compilation was not one of them. Why they didn't use the sublime version from the 2004 Fox shows (or equivalent) is beyond me. Better yet, they could have spent a couple hours at one of their rehearsals to capture a real clean studio cut.

I don't agree with this guy's take on Warren's harmony vocals. He's a great harmony singer. Church harmonies? Nah. But anyone who can harmonize with Phil Lesh is talented.

Ya, Tim, I love that 'Endless Highway' Tribute disc....but never understood why they picked an ABB version where Gregg Effed up the words. I mean there HAS to be a version where he didn't?!

I'd like to see a similar poll regarding 'The Weight'...

I gotta give this one to the Jerry Garcia Band version off the 1991 live album of the same name. Not sure why Phil is listed and this version isn't.

I understand the historical aspects of the ABB playing this song but I think it's one of those things that works better in theory than reality . I've seen and heard Gregg screw up the words too many times. Now the ABB playing Layla is a different story

I'll just have to stick with The Band. It's the only version I REALLY like.

None of the rest really do anything for me.

Same here. And even the Band's version doesn't really do it for me either but that is probably from hearing it too much.

The Allmans are easily my favorite band, but their cover of "Ole Dixe" never worked for me. I think it is a serious drag, it usually brings a concert to a halt. I do like the tune, but The Band's version is the only one that ever did it for me.

Levon Helm's voice owns "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down".

Definately NOT the ABB version.

To me that's a waste of a song at a live show.

The Band's is the best for me.

The Band it is... I have seen the ABB do it live several times, and have always found it falls short of the standard set by the Band

I couldn't agree more. How I hate hearing the Brothers do that song

I dig when the ABB do Band covers. It shows how talented The Band really was at doing them in the first place

For some reason, The Band's songs and ABB don't go together very well.
I love Gregg's vocals but he doesn't get it with this song.

I love this song, and while I like Joan Baez's version best, I also love hearing Levon Helm singing it. And some credit goes to the writer, Robbie Robertson.

Put me down with the "love The Band version, scratching your head over why the ABB do it" group.

The thing about this thread was who does the best cover. Sure Levon owns this song, no doubt about it. Personally, I wish the ABB would put this tune on the shelf along with Highway 61.

While I agree "Dixie" doesn't fit the ABB at all, their version of "The Weight" is pretty solid.

I also agree. A solid attempt, but it sounds a lot like "Good Clean Fun" for some reason, kind of trashy. Dickey's (and Susan's) Dylan cover is much better.

I dig the ABB's 2004 version from the fox. it may be a bit mellow for a concert, but i like the ups and downs of a setlist. just my 2 ¢

I actually voted for the Black Crowes version....outside of Levon, I've never heard anybody so "honestly" just belt out that song like Chris Robinson.

90 pounds soaking wet, but that dude can flat out sing.
