Levon Helm is coming to play in Philly, and unless the price turns out to be outrageous, I'm going to go. But, I've got a question . . .

Has anyone seen him perform lately? I have a live album from several years ago, Helm & the Crowmatix I think it's called . . . anyway, he really doesn't sing much on there. I believe he has (had?) some throat issues.

How much does he sing at his shows. How good are his shows? Just general views on what to expect here would be great!

I saw him a couple months back in Asbury Park.
You need to go see him.
He sings just about every song in the show, except Teresa Williams (Larry Campbell's wife) did "Long Black Veil" and special guest, Phoebe Snow, came out and sang 2 songs, and Campbell and the trombonist Richie ? (the guy from Conan's band) shared the vocals on "Tears of Rage". Levon is the only drummer on the stage. Plays mandolin for alot of the Dirt Farmer songs. Levon's vocals are a bit thin, but thats nitpicking, you soon forget it when you see the sheer effort he puts into his performance, and the joy he gets in performing.

His band is absolutely fantastic w/ long time Dylan sideman, Larry Campbell, handling guitars, as well as Levon's daughter who plays percussion and sings back up with Teresa Williams, and they play a pretty nice selection of "The Band" tunes during the performance.

Levon did undergo surgery for throat cancer a number of years back, but he's fully recovered, and doing great.

Go, don't miss it, great show. Saw him in Asbury Park a year or so ago. Great band...Larry Campell, Theresa Williams. Levon in top form. Playing the drums and singing.

Don't miss him. I have a live show from Sept. last year and it is outstanding. Great song selection and his band is really tight. He played some classic Band tunes and other material. He still sings most tunes and his voice is as good as I've heard it. Wish he was coming north of the border, I'd go see him for sure

I absolutley can't wait to see him at the beacon in 2 weeks. I saw him this past summer and it was the best show I've seen in a long time. He's the best.

He was recovering from Throat surgery around the time he was playing with Prof Louie and the Crowmatix. He wanted to keep his drum chops together and was playing really small places. Sometimes his name wouldn't even be on the bill. He was actually sitting in with a Dead cover band called the Electrix at a Hot Tuna post Beacon show party at some tiny bar around 2000 or so.

I just happened to be standing near the door to the make shift VIP area and he walked up to me and kind of asked me permission to go down stairs. I had about 15 extra pounds on me back then and I was into weight lifting so I think he mistook me for a bouncer. I couldn't believe I was talking to him. Super nice guy and just having a great time playing drums. Pete Sears and Mike Flazarano ended up jamming with him and the Electrix. It was a super cool night.

I'm looking forward to the new album he's working on and hopefully buying his recent live CD at the show.
