Any idea why Kim Payne, Willie Perkins and Red Dog were not at least comped front row seats to a show and, maybe, asked to come up on stage and take a bow?
Not in exact words, but Duane always used to say the band would be nowhere without their road crew and, in the beginning, THEY always got paid first. And before that, when nobody was getting paid, they lived on Red Dog's monthly check from the government. Not to mention the fact that it was Red Dog's birthday and I remember Gregg asking him to come out and take a bow at Carnegie Hall at one of the Gregg and friends shows.
Twiggs and Joe Dan are not with us because of terrible tragedies. Callahan needed a liver but nobody with any money stepped up to the plate when he needed it; he did receive a lovely floral arrangement of a mushroom at his funeral, however.

Not trying to pick a fight with you, but we all know those stories (or at least most of us.)

That was a long time ago, things change.

It would have been a nice and classy gesture, Elizabeth. But ... I have to agree with heineken, things change. There was at least one other with contributions to the band and a friend of Duane who was conspicious by his absence. However, I don't think it diminished the music or the moment for what it was ... do you? Peace.

They were invited but politely declined. They've been in contact with Gregg. It's all good.

I agree with Elizabeth... if not for the roadies ... and what they contributed towards the band.. It may have taken quite a different path..and quite a bit longer perhaps to get where they were going.. Oh they would've gotten there no doubt... Tons of talent like that can never be corralled for long.. it was busting at the seams...

It was all about Duane's band... and he saw it fit to include the roadies... somehow that has been forgotten in telling some of the story, or so it seems to me..

Duane was not only their boss but he felt they were his family and his friends... I have said months ago...when you a celebrating a 40th like the ABB.. you need to remember it all and all who put you in the stratus fare.... They were the hard working roadies... and Dickey Betts was their lead guitar player...

But I guess things HAVE changed.

wish Duane and Berry were still alive...

Hey Thanks Bruce...

I went back through my personal msg's and as of 1/26/09 Red Dog had not received an invitation to 40th anniversary and all who knew and were influenced by The Duane gig...

Then unfortunately Red Dog s Mom passed away and Joseph had some pc issues and the advice of his true friends to stay away from here...not good for his heart and soul...

I just went back and found a letter Red Dog wrote to me.. ya know the kind in the US mail anyway his goal all along was to try and get DB back with the Brothers... and that letter was dated 2/14/09 Valentines Day.... Init he mentioned that it has or will happen ..but that he did not recieve one.. and he said he was cool with that...HMMM

Also side note.. Red Dog if you are able to read this on a friends pc ... just checking in and saying a Big Hello ..hows Buster, The Warrior , Me Shell, and of course the ever faithful Goldie... all living in the woods and diggin it..
All my best and I miss you and your honesty on site. Be well. and you are missed

Kim Payne... not sure ..we need to ask Pam ..if she wants to tell his business or not ..I understand ... It only puts things in their rightful place... if there is truth or if there are lies.. that's it.. Plain and simple..

IF Willie received his invite Lizzie never mentioned it.. and again she is some one who would know .

Yeah that would have been cool. I enjoyed the music, but everytime I thought about how Dickey's contributions to the band over 30 years were ignored, it made me sad. Sometimes I feel like the idea of making it all about Duane was a convenient way to ignore everyone else.

Willie was not invited and is very disappointed.

On the first anniversary of his being hired by the band when Twiggs went to jail, Duane gave Willie a gold pocket watch (which is now beautifully displayed in a private collector's archive). Duane said it was for 25 years of service in one year.

I hear Kim and Red Dog were invited but politely declined. Good thinkin', guys.

Lizzie .. Thanks for answering .... that's what I thought...

As far as Red Dog .... when I received that postmarked letter from him ..it was Valentines Day 2/14/09 and at that time he still WAS not invited..... If the invite came .. it sure came in LATE... perhaps that is why a decline was the response... The whole thing stinks...

Etiquette wise... when your having a party, celebration, honoring tribute, and so on.. you start WITH A LIST .. of the most important people who helped make it all happen , or who are involved in a personal way .. etc... To me ... the person making out that list needed to check his ego at the door first....

Who came or who didn't come doesn't really matter. They dedicated the run to the one person that mattered most to the start of the band and that's Duane. No one else was going anywhere until Duane formed the band. It was Duane's talent and contacts that made the Allman Brothers Band happen.

That's not taking away the talent or hard work of everyone else, but the Allman Brothers always was and always will be Duane's band. He had the vision and drive. So dedicating the Anniversary of the birth of the group to Duane is entirely appropriate.

It seems to me that by playing some of Dickie's music, the band is acknowleging his part in the band.

Now I think it's a shame Dickie isn't in the band and that the relationships with the roadies isn't better. But life goes on. The sad thing about Dickie is that there's issues on both sides between the original members. It happens. It's up to them to work it out.

Rather than make yourself upset about the situation, just enjoy the music both Dickie and the ABB are makiing.

I think Dickey Betts would have certainly gone "somwhere".
Someone thought enough of his playing to write these lyrics!

I must correct myself. The missing "old boys" were invited last Tuesday to attend Thursday night's official anniversary show. They all declined because life happens and nobody could make it; at least Willie didn't want to make it at that late date. It was a slap in the face.
Kirk apologized. It was not his doing; something, some people, slipped through the cracks until the very last minute.

So it was insulting when you thought they were not invited and a slap in the face when you found out they actually were asked?

This stuff just never ends.

I stand by my post, the invite was out there. What's the purpose of stirring the pot both ways? Unless one has an agenda.

Folks were asked, couldn't make it. "Life happens..."

No agenda. I just know these guys and how important they were to the band in the beginning days (and some for years and years) and that I think inviting such important and dedicated gentlemen should have been invited with more than two day's notice. It was an obvious afterthought and maybe encouraged by us making some noise here.
I know Kirk had nothing to do with this - as he once said "Willie will always be a VIP to me".
Glad this whole thing is over.
Peach AND love,
Lizzie
