There seems to be some great comprehension that LS originally wrote Free Bird for Duane Allman. The original work on the shortened version is listed as such:

LIVE SHOW: May 9, 1970
Freebird
STUDIO SESSION: October 1970 Quinvy Studios, Sheffield, Alabama
Freebird
STUDIO SESSION: June 28-July 2, 1971 Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Sheffield, Alabama
Free Bird

Since Duane did not pass until 29 Oct 71, and the longer version was actually recorded about a year and a half later, it cannot be truthfully be stated that Van Zant penned the song to honor Duane, rather, that after Duane died the song may have been dedicated to him. The older version is out on cd.

I'm pretty sure I read where Gary Rossington said that the song was dedicated to Duane, not written for Duane.

I think it was a dedication thing........

I'm no Skynyrd expert......

Other than I always though a fifth of liqour and Skynyrd went together well !

"Won't you fly.............away....Freebird"

I remember how I liked it when it first came out........

Then the radio went nuts...and some of my buddies kept playing it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.....................

and over..........

and over........

then people kept yelling "Play.....Freebird"

and over

and over

"Play Freebird...............

I saw some punk band do a cover once. Real fast. It was over in about 1:30. Damn good version.

It is the dedicated theory by the way.

I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but I managed to miss the whole Dean expulsion thing.

Funny thing is, I was browsing through old posts only yesterday, trying to find out more about this Southernman that everyone was on about - no offence intended to anyone involved (and I wouldn't even have mentioned it, but for this thread), but some of that stuff was HILARIOUS! Believe me, it isn't easy trying to hide a smirk during office hours!

You have to find the posts under his various fake personnae...where he really got vulgar and abusive, and that was before he posted anything

Hmm - this is what I was hearing, Carlos; that, and the habit of deleting posts & threads.

I can't say I feel entitled to offer any sort of opinion on what went on but, for a few days in March, this place must have been bedlam!!

Anyway, I'd better shut up on the matter...

I've got a Dave Matthews / Tim Reynolds bootleg where someone yells out "Freebird" from the crowd. Dave simply retorts, "I've got your freebird!" LMAO the first time I heard it.

Yeah, I think lucky is the word you want.

He said some stuff that was funny, but the thing you have to realize is that usually, he wasn't kidding. He was like an internet version of Rainman- "Skynyrd. Definitely Lynyrd Skynyrd..." The pattern of "attack people, act confused, then act contrite, then start up again a few days later" got old pretty fast.

hey, ronnie, that's pretty funny. last year at the dTb show at the Visulite, as the band was coming out of the intermission, on the tape, you can hear someone shout from one side of the room, "FREEBIRD!!!" and almost instantly, from he other side, someone shouts as if reacting to an electric shock "N-O-O-O-O-O-OOOO!!!!" I about fell out when I first heard it, in part because I'd LMAO at the time, then forgotten it had happened. deja vu all over again!

Geesh Carlos you really are AR. When Freebird was first written it didn't have the Jam at the end that actually came later. Billy Powell got asked to join the band (he was a roadie) after he plays his version of Freebird on the piano. It wasn't written for Duane although I doubt if DA had never been around there probably wouldn't have been a slide part at the beginning. But it was definately dedicated to Brother Duane after his death. It is a great song with it's only drawback being some **** hollaring out Freebird during coutless bar band sets. Musicians the world over hate the song because of this. Oh Carlos I'll tell you something that you don't know....................the meaning of Freebird. According to Brother Leon himself "Freebird means no more." Oh what's this about somebody getting banned? Is this recent?

I've mentioned this before, but on Dave Alvin's Out in California record, someone yells out Freebird ..... Dave Alvins sez, "What, you think we don't know that song ...." The band launches into a ragged version of it that lasts a minute or so .... very funny stuff ....

Yes, Charlesinator, I told you the truth

You know the Peachies this year needed Dean's cutting edge commentary....

"And, presenting the award for most admired .....(sounds of envelope getting opened)....damn, not him/her again....!@#$$%%^^&&**(())"

Actually, the "original" LS was a very very good band, and like many other acts, the spark is hard to reproduce when you lose primary or vital members.............Anyone want to see LZ reunite again with Phil Collins

Cheers

Dean was banned more than six months ago, so no, it wasn't a recent thing.

I'm pretty sure I heard someone yell for Freebird at one of the Beacon show's I've been listening to.

I sure thought I heard it either on 3/30 or 3/28 from this year. I'd have to listen again. It wasn't very loud, whatever it was. Maybe my ears were playing tricks on me.

I guess it wouldn't be that weird. We have a bi-weekly Performance Hour at my dorm, and whenever anyone gets up to play some music, people will shout for Freebird or Stairway to Heaven. Or a few other things.

Dean created me, so to speak, since I first made a comment on the forum in response to something he wrote that was old, and I didn't notice the date. Well we're all born between p and s. Gonna have to search some old thread comments and maybe have a laugh.
