Two nice things from this show:

1 DVD of a short (5:50) video of clips synced with the audio.

1 CD of audio merged from three sources.

From the dime post:
quote:
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Sunday, 18 May 1969
Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY

1. Intro
2. Lover Man
3. Come On (part 1)
4. Red House
5. Fire/Drum Solo ->
6. Spanish Castle Magic/Guitar Solo/Villanova Junction Blues/Spanish Castle Magic
7. Hear My Train A Comin'
8. I Don't Live Today
9. Voodoo Child (slight return)
10. Purple Haze

The audio presented here is a three-source merge of the two circulating sources and one that has yet to circulate. It's nicely complete and stereophonic. The video is DVD-quality and runs 5:50, it's a recent resync by JamminJimi so what used to be silent now has sound. As always, this makes it a lot more enjoyable.

18 May 1999 marks 30 years since Jimi's 69 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This is the last ever east coast appearance of the Experience (i.e. Jimi with Noel). A homecoming of sorts, Jimi turns in some great performances here but seems a bit distracted by the circumstances of the huge arena (revolving stage, flashbulbs). Sure would've been nice if he'd played a multi-night stand at the Fillmore East with it's intimate vibe and good sound (would like to think that the tapers from MSG would've done the same at the Fillmore!). More $ to be made with one sold-out 19,000 seat show, though- just the situation that Bill Graham lamented when he closed the Fillmores (Jimi, of course, would return to the Fillmore come New Years...). The show was opened, as were the two previous east coast dates, by Buddy Miles (who will play a big part in Jimi's muse later in 69).

There are two tapes that survive from MSG. The problem is that this night featured a revolving stage, which meant that a stationary taper gets a constantly changing sound mix. Apparently, the PA system for the vocals (and drums, to some extent) was stationary and the stage, including the guitar and bass amps, revolved so the guitar sound phases in and out. Marshalls being as directional as they are, the guitar gets *very loud* when aimed directly at the taper's mic (a 360 degree revolution every 4 and 1/2 minutes or so, going by the frequency of the loudest guitar sections!). If you can monitor your tape deck during fast forward (watch the volume!) you can actually hear the cyclical nature of the sound in compressed time! Except for the more extreme moments, I found it relatively easy to concentrate on the music (that you can hear the guitar so well when it's facing the other way tells you how loud Jimi played!). Apparently, some audience members spent the whole show walking the aisles, following the revolution of the stage so they could always be looking at Jimi!
BTW this show was well documented pictorially with one of the better known collections from photographer Nona Hatay (she's a local, too - always enjoy telling people that I bought my Jimi T-shirt from the person who actually took the Jimi pic!). One Nona pic prompts a gear note: I notice in one of her shots that the neck on the white Strat has a large piece of tape plainly visible on it's rear behind the nut/first fret area. Have always wondered if it was a quick fix for a developing crack. May or may not play a part in the appearance of a Telecaster neck on a white Strat for the last couple of tour dates in June but likely we'll never know for sure.
(Setlist): Lover Man; Come On (Pt 1); Red House; Fire; Spanish Castle Magic; Hear My Train; I Don't Live Today; Voodoo Child (SR); Purple Haze

After wishing the crowd "peace and happiness" Jimi launches into 'Lover Man'. Improvises on the opening notes before going into usual intro. A broken string throws the guitar out of tune and Jimi drops out after opening verse, starting his solo when he returns. Turns in a decent solo but more problems are evident and sure enough, at the end he says he's broken *two* strings ("..oh well, that's two less to worry about later on...")! This is the last documented time the Experience will perform 'Lover Man' (nee 'Rock Me Baby'), though it remains a part of Jimi's latter-day sets. After the song, Noel mentions getting dizzy from the revolving stage and Jimi tells the photographers that the band can't concentrate because of the flashbulbs. Pictures do show a low stage with cameras right in Jimi's face (Not Nona, though, because as a pro she had no flash!).

Also the last Experience performance of 'Come On'. Never an oft-heard song, we have only 8 Exp. renditions on the record (3 in US, 5 from the Jan/69 European shows). He would visit it at the Newport Pop jam then pull it out one last time in Stockholm on the last '70 tour. He improvises an intro using the verse riff then starts the vocals suddenly, the band falling in after the second line. Afterward, Jimi says "we're not gonna play if you don't stop flashing the cameras", even asking "aren't you all supposed to be sitting down?".

'Red House' is slightly cut on one source tape. Jimi may be using a Gibson here. Pics from the show reveal him playing a 'Flying V' backstage and show the 'V' standing by onstage, though have seen no pics of him actually playing it. The tone here does sound Gibson like but is a little ambiguous. These are the first pics I've seen of any guitar other than Strats on the 69 US tour and this may have just been a one night stand with this 'V' (maybe someone brought it for him to try or, if his, maybe it's one that he kept at home in NYC?). After a couple of verses of opening solo, he phrases with the guitar as if he's going to start singing but no words are heard- maybe a dead mic or he got distracted, but he does begin the vocals in the next 12 bars. The main solo gives way, as usual, to the 'percussive chord' section though Jimi can't be heard very well here (may not even be playing all the way through) and he goes right into the last vocal verse without doing the unaccompanied interlude.

Introduces 'Fire' as one for the "teeny weenies" and dedicates it to that "girl in the yellow underwear". The solo ends with a restatement of the intro riff but instead of finishing the song he gives it to Mitch for a drum solo...

...which ends in the 'Spanish Castle Magic intro. This version of SCM is oft cited as one of his best and he does do some great explorations here. The low E string goes flat near the start but Jimi manages to tune 'on the fly' around the 2 min. mark. At about 2:30 he slips in a riff reminiscent of 'Secret Agent Man' or perhaps the James Bond theme! At 4:30 he starts alternating the C# chord with a B chord under, then does some amazingly long sustained feedback notes over it (at some point the collectors apparently starting calling this section "The Symphony", or so a guitar mag tells us...). Jimi then turns in yet another unaccompanied 'flamenco' flavored interlude as on recent SCMs. He does a section of changing chords over the root note (much as we would later hear in the Jimi/Buddy jams from fall 69) then we hear a snatch of 'Bolero' and then he suddenly shifts gears at 7:00 and we get the very first public appearance of 'Villanova Junction Blues', the 'Thrill Is Gone' inspired Am blues which most of us would first hear as 'Instrumental Solo' on the original Woodstock album. Only brief, though, as he heads right back into the SCM riff at 7:30 for the last verse of same.

Immediately falls into some low register riffing that becomes the intro to HMT, this time without opening vocal statement. Does a unique descending variation on the main riff and hesitates a few extra bars between verses. Solo builds nicely and he moves to some 'lighter touch' wah playing around 5:35. Opens last verse with "I'll be glad when I leave this town..." (further evidence that MSG was getting to him is the poem he wrote later that night called 'Escape From The Roman Coliseum'- perhaps prophetic, as his next visit to MSG in Jan '70 would not go well at all....).

The 'IDLT' solo section this night features snatches of '3rd Stone' and 'Star Spangled Banner'

Jimi introduces VC(SR) by saying "Now we'd like to begin the show" then mentions all the flashbulbs and dedicates the song to "...the people who came to *listen*". Despite a pre-song tune up he begins with the high strings flat but sneaks in some tuning on the fly! There's a nice unaccompanied section in the middle and he begins the "... your sweet time..." verse virtually acapella, the band falling in behind. Repeats the "If I don't see yo no more..." line some 10 times, exploring subtle variations, and even repeats the "Meet you on the next one..." line a couple of times.

After apologizing for the revolving stage (this was apparently the Garden's doing and had been used for a Blind Faith show around the same time) Jimi says "..we'll play outdoors next time...". Finishes with Purple Haze, which gets a slightly longer main solo and a particularly wild solo coda. Tape finishes with some suit intoning "Stay off the stage..."!

Chris
